Columbia Sportswear’s New Compass
For years, Columbia sat in the “meh” middle of the outdoor gear world. Not premium like Arc’teryx, not purpose-driven like Patagonia, not scrappy like Cotopaxi. Just… there. A brand with a hundred SKUs too many, sold in big-box stores, worn by dads on fishing trips and mall hikers. Affordable, sure. But exciting? Never.
After the passing of Gert Boyle—the “One Tough Mother” who was Columbia’s spokesperson with a sandpaper-like gruff exterior—it seemed like the brand had faded quietly into gear irrelevance, guided by another vanilla boardroom that wanted to be the next forgotten, marked-down sku at a TJ Maxx.
Truth be told, they were conspiring with a bold, cheeky, and smart outdoor ad that just dropped this August: “Engineered For Whatever.”
Created in partnership with London’s adam&eveDDB, this spot is Columbia finally doing what so many brands fail to—committing to a point of view. No influencer montages. No TikTok transitions. No outdoor couple sharing coffee on the roof of a Sprinter van. Just raw, hilarious nature chaos colliding with beautifully animated gear mishaps—and a wink to those of us who actually go outside for more than a photo op.
The campaign flips the script on modern outdoor content. It doesn’t glamorize adventure. It doesn’t ask you to post about it. It just reminds you that nature doesn’t care about your social following—and Columbia? Like nature, they’re okay with that.
For a brand that always felt too safe, this is their first real risk. And it stands out amongst the vertical.
Will I buy Columbia gear now? Maybe. They’ve earned a place in my mental shortlist—not because of product specs or a colorway, but because they put creativity first.
